I hope some of you managed to catch the latest Jamie Oliver TV series, the one on school dinners. It's one of the few shows I actually bothered to watch of late. There was a great piece on the show last night where he showed kids what was actually in the chicken nuggets they love so much. If you missed it and you like eating that sort of crap then read on, read on also if you want confirmation that you are doing the right thing by NOT eating that crap!!

The vast majority of nuggets aren't whole pieces of chicken -- instead the chicken is either chopped into small bits or "comminuted," which means the meat and skin is finely ground into an almost paste-like concoction. At that point, binders are added to make it stick together and it's pressed into the traditional nugget shape. Some brands also offer "fun" shapes like stars and dinosaurs.

Popular brands of chicken nuggets tend to have far more grams of fat and carbohydrates than they do protein, and most are made with partially hydrogenated oils -- meaning they include cancer-causing trans fats.

Consider McDonald's nuggets -- a kid-size serving of four nuggets contains 210 calories, with 120, or 57%, of those calories coming from fat. By weight, the nuggets contain 13 grams of fat, 12 grams of carbohydrates and 10 grams of protein.

Compare that with 72 grams of roasted, skinless chicken breast, which has 22 grams of protein, no carbs, and less than one gram of fat.

Here's a quick and easy to follow illustration on how to make a nugget

To be really truthful though you need to add chicken bones, necks and innards to step 1, cos that's what actually goes in there. Enjoy!!

Whilst watching this series over the last few weeks, I had to laugh out loud a few times during the adverts. A show devoted to showing one and all how shit fast food is and how no one should eat it, actually had at least 3 adverts for either McDonalds, KFC or Chicken Treat!! The one that made me laugh the most was on almost directly after the chicken nugget piece, it was an advert for the Chicken Treat Fillet Burger!! bahahahahahaha nice work tiger!!
